Persistent soil seed banks promote naturalisation and invasiveness in flowering plants

چکیده
With globalisation facilitating the movement of plants and seeds beyond native range, preventing potentially harmful introductions requires knowledge what drives successful establishment spread alien plants. Here, we examined global-scale relationships between naturalisation success (incidence extent) invasiveness, soil seed bank properties (type densities) key species traits (seed mass, dormancy life form) for 2350 angiosperms. Naturalisation invasiveness were strongly associated with ability to form persistent (vs. transient) banks but relatively weakly densities other traits. Our findings suggest that persistence is a trait better captures become naturalised invasive compared more widely available in databases. Knowledge can contribute our predict global identify flowering before they are introduced.

Reproductive cross-talk: seed development in flowering plants.
Flowering plants have evolved to be a predominant life form on earth. A common principle of flowering plants and probably one of the main reasons for their evolutionary success is the rapid development of an embryo next to a supporting tissue called the endosperm. The embryo and the endosperm are protected by surrounding maternal tissues, the integuments, and the trinity of integuments, embryo ...
متن کاملRegenerative role of seed banks following an intense soil disturbance
Our main aim was to determine the contribution of the seed bank to vegetation regeneration following a disturbance consisting in a deep ploughing and a thorough homogenisation of a perennial grassland. In the seed bank prior to disturbance, seed distribution through the vertical soil profile was evaluated to determine the initial seed species structure. Then, several characteristics of the shal...

Flowering plants represent the most significant branch in the tree of land plants, with respect to the number of extant species, their impact on the shaping of modern ecosystems and their economic importance. However, unlike so many persistent phylogenetic problems that have yielded to insights from DNA sequence data, the mystery surrounding the origin of angiosperms has deepened with the adven...

متن کاملSeed dormancy and delayed flowering in monocarpic plants: selective interactions in a stochastic environment.
We explore the effects of temporal variation in multiple demographic rates on the joint evolution of delayed reproduction and seed dormancy using integral projection models (IPMs). To do this, we extend the standard IPM to include a discrete state variable representing the number of seeds in the seed bank, density-dependent recruitment, and temporal variation in demography. Parameter estimates ...
